5 MORE BAD DRIVING HABITS THAT ARE HARMFUL TO YOUR CAR

5 MORE BAD DRIVING HABITS THAT ARE HARMFUL TO YOUR CAR

1. Following Too Closely and Braking

Many drivers have a tendency to follow very closely to the car in front of them to avoid having someone cut in. But all that accelerating and sudden stopping is hard on your brakes. Braking creates heat, and can eventually cause warpage in the brake rotor, which will lead to pulsation. That pulsation is hard on the steering components and bearings because they’re constantly vibrating.

Billboards Deliver Targeted Ads By Identifying Your Car
Billboards
By Hannah H    30 October 2016
There is this interesting article I just read on the CBC News website about the way advertisers can target drivers using Vehicle Recognition Technology. This technology recently rolled out in London with the campaign for the All-New Renault Mégane.

CBC Radio technology columnist Dan Misener reports: "If you're stopped at a traffic light near one of these billboards, the camera will capture an image of the front of your vehicle, and computer vision software will identify the type of car you're driving. And then, based on that information, the billboard will change to show you a message targeted to the kind of person the system thinks you are. The whole process only takes about one second." Read More.
Driving On Empty
DRIVING ON EMPTY - HOW FAR CAN YOU GO?
By Hannah H    5 November 2016
I came across this article, fond it interesting, and worth sharing.

Of course, you would never let your tank get so low that the little light popped on warning you that you should refuel, ha ha, but if you did, this chart outlines exactly how much further you can expect to go on what little is left in the tank.

The chart below, put together by YourMechanic (www.yourmechanic.com), lists the 50 best-selling cars in the United States in 2015 and their drive-on-emptry information.

The story starts with Hydrogen:

We're starting to see more automakers turn their attention to hydrogen-powered cars. Honda announced it would be selling its hydrogen-powered sedan, the Honda Clarity, in California by the end of 2016. Lexus showed off its hydrogen-powered LF-LC concept car at the Detroit Auto Show, and Audi showed off its hydrogen-powered concept car the h-tron quattro. And then there's Toyota, which has been working on hydrogen-powered cars for years and has sold Toyota Mirai.

All these developments beg the question: are hydrogen-powered cars better that traditional battery-powered vehicles?

NEW LAWS FOR MOTORISTS IN 2017

New Laws For 2017
Yes, it’s February (already!), but just in case you missed it, here is a recap of some of the new 2017 laws you should be aware of.

Wireless Devices
“This bill targets the deadliest cause of distracted driving related crashes, the use of an electronic device while driving," Assemblymember Bill Quirk said. AB 1785 revises the current law on using wireless communications devices, like smart phones, while driving.

Driving And Back Pain
Driving and Back Pain
By Hannah H    24 February 2017
The human body is not designed to be in a sitting position for long periods of time. Sitting for prolonged periods can cause low back pain or worsen an existing one. This is because sitting in a static posture puts tremendous stress on the back, shoulders, arms and legs. The back muscles and spinal discs are specially vulnerable. Experts advise standing up, walking around and stretching every 30 minutes to ease the pressure.

This is all very good when you are working at your desk. But when you’re driving and stuck behind the wheel, the dynamics are different all together. It is so unlike sitting in an office chair. According to Alan Hedge, Ph.D. professor of ergonomics at Cornell University, your body is subjected to a lot of different forces in a vehicle - accelerations, side-to-side swaying and vibrations.

WHAT IS ALL WHEEL DRIVE - AND DO YOU NEED IT?
All Wheel Drive
By Hannah H    2 June 2017
Many drivers would never choose a vehicle without all-wheel drive (AWD), yet most of them will never take it off road. With today's traction controls and electronic systems, is AWD really necessary, especially in California? Let’s take a closer look.

Many car buyers are confused by the matter of which wheels actually drive the vehicle, and which is best for their particular needs. There are four main choices: front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Each has its advantages, and no single layout is best for all situations.

Front-wheel drive
Most passenger vehicles on the road today use front-wheel drive (FWD), where the engine’s power is routed to the front wheels. In fact, all but a handful of SUVs are primarily front-wheel drive vehicles, with additional components that send some power to the rear wheels as the need arises.

Power Steering Basics
Power Steering

Power steering is specifically designed to help driver's steer more efficiently and with far less effort than they would have to use without it.

What power steering basically does is use power (either thru the hydraulics system or thru electricity) to assist the driver when he steers the car.

Are Women Angrier Drivers
Angry Driver
By Hannah H    27 June 2017
WOMEN DRIVERS GET ANGRIER WHEN DRIVING

A new study found women get 12% ANGRIER than men in different scenarios in the car. Women get 14% angrier than men at backseat drivers; 13% angrier at people who don’t use turn signals; and between 10% and 12% angrier when people pass them, shout at them, or honk at them. According to a study by Hyundai Motor UK, if you're a female driver, you're a lot angrier than men who get behind the wheel.

London-based behavioral psychologist Patrick Fagan recently did a study that involved 1,000 drivers who were subjected to something he calls "sense testing." To measure their emotional responses while driving, the men and women who took part in the study had to respond to smell, sound, light, touch and taste during different driving scenarios.

Power Steering Basics
By Hannah H    20 July 2017
DriveTribe is here - and very cool! After the fracas in 2015 which saw the non-renewal (effectively a dismissal) of the contract of presenter Jeremy Clarkson from the long running show Top Gear, and the eventual resignation of the show's executive producer and entire presenting line-up of Andy Wilman, Richard Hammond, and James May, the Bad Boys of motoring are back. And with a vengeance.

BUY A CAR WITHOUT LEAVING HOME

Buy A Car Without Leaving Home
With cars becoming more and more available for purchase online, it can be hard to decide whether you want to purchase your car over the Internet or go the standard route by visiting a dealership.

In today's world, you really can do a large portion of the car-buying process online or over the phone. Finding a car is easy through thousands of local listings, giving you the ability to narrow down your search and identify the exact car of your choosing.

You can search through new, used and certified pre-owned cars; you can sort by make, model, body style, trim level, engine size and even color. This saves a lot of time that used to be spent traveling from dealer to dealer looking for the car you want.
